There are many organizations that can be very helpful to the budding publisher when it comes to marketing your work and discovering new ways of doing business.

Writing is often considered a lonely profession, although most writers do not claim to feel lonely. While the work may be solitary in nature, it is not “lonesome” in nature. However, as a result of being somewhat isolated, writers often join organizations and groups that help foster writing and promote camaraderie.

When it comes to publishing and marketing, however, these same people often forge ahead by themselves, using only written resources for their information, advice and encouragement. While many resources, such as Dan Poynter’s The Self-Publishing Manual (Para Publishing, 2003) and John Kremer’s 1001 Ways to Market Your Books (Open Horizons, 2006) are excellent, personal contact is missing.

Organizations for Networking

It is highly beneficial for the would-be publisher/marketer to consider joining an organization or two whose main focus is publishing and/or marketing, not writing per se. Networking in this manner is highly helpful, educational and will lead to greater sales opportunities and learning good marketing strategies.

Often these networking groups have speakers who are specialists in publishing and marketing and can provide a wealth of information, help and advice. In fact, other members themselves can also be a source of help and information. There’s no point in making mistakes and learning the hard way, which in the publishing business can be the “hard and expensive way.”

Opportunities to sell your book are also a benefit of joining a publishing group. You’ll not only hear of book events, but the organizations themselves often host events. See if your state has a professional publishing organization. Dues are well worth the information you’ll receive, and usually dues and travel expenses to the meetings are tax deductible.

Internet Networking

Most people are aware of the opportunities for networking afforded on internet sites like linkedin.com and Facebook. You can find these and other internet groups who can also offer you help, advice and friendship. While internet networking lacks the face-to-face personal meeting, it can still be a highly productive area.

Remember that networking should not be just a “what’s in it for me,” experience. Networking is sharing and learning, meeting new people and making new friends, in addition to establishing contacts and getting needed information and help.

Conferences and Workshops

Conferences and workshops are held in most areas at least once or twice a year, usually more. While these are not networking groups themselves, they are highly valuable not just for the information disseminated, but also for the networking opportunities they present. This is a chance to meet influential speakers, publishers, agents, marketing experts and other writers who may be struggling with the same questions and issues as you.

There’s no need to go it alone when you start on this venture. Networking can be well worth your time and attention, and in the long run it may save you time and money.
